If it’s too hot in the city, then it’s best to spend your free time at the public parks, enjoying some fresh air under the shadows of mango trees or on the margins of the river, where you can feel a fresh breeze and watch a beautiful sunset. Here are some options:

Estação das Docas

This tourist complex is a national reference for offering, in just one place, options in gastronomy, fashion, entertainment and events, with comfort and safety. On the margins of Guajará Bay, it’s 500 meters long facing the coast and has three warehouses, spread over 32.000 m2, made up of bars and restaurants, in addition to a river terminal for boarding and disembarking passengers.

Belém Porto Futuro

Park located in front of Belém waterway terminal, it’s part of the port area of the capital of Pará. The project has running tracks, cycling, a playground, free Wi-Fi and an artificial lake.

Mangal das Garças

Ecological refuge with fauna and flora specimens native of the Amazon. It has a 360­º viewpoint overlooking Belém, a butterfly garden, a bird and plant nursery, restaurants and the Navigation Museum.

Complexo Ver-o-Rio

The place has a beautiful view of the sunset, a small lake with pedal boats and other traditional attractions, such as ice cream stands, sweets, typical food, tapioca and bars.

Complexo Arquitetônico de Nazaré

Comprising the Basílica Santuário, Praça Santuário, the Centro Social and the Memória de Nazaré space, it relates to everything tied to the devotion of the people from Pará to Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, a religious and cultural festivity which always happens in October. Around Praça Santuário, there are stands serving typical food from the region and there are also options both for day and night. Special attention to Nazaré Avenue, one of the main avenues of the city, which has mango trees on both sides, and to Brás de Aguiar Avenue, where you can find restaurants, bars, cafés and stores.

Complexo Feliz Lusitânia

Outdoor area with century-old buildings from the colonial era, with canons and stonewalls. Forte do Presépio, Casa das Onze Janelas, Catedral da Sé and Igreja de Santo Alexandre are also part of this area.

Praça da República

Close to the Historic Centre of Belém, between Campina, Reduto and Nazaré neighborhood, Praça da Repúplica is a public square with many tourist attractions all around: Theatro da Paz, Teatro Waldemar Henrique, Parque João Coelho e Praça da Sereia. On Sundays, there is a traditional fair with handicraft stands, food vendors, second-hand books and records and also imported products.

Praça Batista Campos

A green refuge in the middle of the city where you can hike, do exercises, or just relax. You can drink some coconut water at many stands all around there.

Praça Brasil

Full of trees and frequently visited, Praça Brasil, in Belém, is a versatile public space, with many options for its visitors. For example, there you can drink the famous Guaraná da Amazônia, an energy drink made from the famous native fruit and other components.

Parque Estadual do Utinga

It’s a Brazilian preservation state unit, managed by Ideflor-bio Institute, with the goal of preserving relevant natural ecosystems and scenic beauty, foster scientific research and encourage the development of environmental education and ecotourism. Its green area is used for hiking, running, biking or roller-skating, as well as for contemplation and meditative activities.

Bosque Rodrigues Alves

Environmental protection area which is home to more than 300 species of flora and 58 species of fauna.

Parque Zoobotânico do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi

The Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (Emílio Goeldi Museum) is a research institution related to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil. With an area of 5,4 ha, the Parque Zoobotânico do Museu Goeldi (Zoobotanical Park of the Goeldi Museum) is located in the urban centre of Belém. Besides being home to many species of flora and fauna from the Amazon, the park is where the educational activities of the institution happen, acting as a laboratory for hands-on classes.

Parque Cemitério Soledade

It’s a public necropolis founded in 1850 due to the yellow fever epidemic of the 19^th century. With more than 400 tombs, it’s a cemetery considered a landmarked site by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional – IPHAN (National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute). It’s a public place which works as a museum as well as a place for heritage education. You can take a guided tour or visit it on your own.

Museums

Museu de Arte Urbana de Belém

Opened in 2023, the Museu de Arte Urbana de Belém (MAUB) is an outdoor art refuge with graffiti artworks from more than 21 visual artists. The artworks display regional themes and are on walls, facades and building located in Complexo do Ver-o-Rio. The biggest artwork has impressive dimensions. It’s 22 meters tall and 56 meters wide.

Museu de Arte Sacra

Located at the old Palácio Episcopal, former Colégio Jesuítico de Santo Alexandre, the Museu de Arte Sacra (Religious Art Museum) opened in September 28^th, 1998. The Santo Alexandre Chuch – originally São Francisco Xavier Church – is part of the museum. The church was built by the priests from Companhia, with indigenous labor, between the end of the 17^th century and beginning of the 18^th century.

Among the many renovations and changes in its architecture throughout the years, the church has inherited as main architectural style the baroque and opened in March 21^st, 1719. It has a collection with many religious images and sculptures from different time periods, either from catholic origin or from other religions.

Museu do Estado do Pará

It has a diverse collection, comprised of paintings, furniture, photos, accessories, and many other artefacts. It’s worth noting that even the building tells the different contexts of the history of Pará. A part of the collection can be seen at the long-term exhibition in the noble rooms on the upper floor and on the ground floor. There are also the Manoel Pastana gallery and Antonio Parreiras gallery, where short-term exhibitions happen.

Museu da UFPA

A beautiful hundred-year-old building with a good amount of local contemporary art. Belonging to the Federal University of Pará, it’s located in the Palacete Augusto Montenegro since 2003. It’s considered the first museum acting towards the preservation and promotion of visual arts from the Amazon.

Memorial dos Povos indígenas e Palacete Bolonha

A cultural space opened in 2003, in Belém do Pará. It’s a public space of 6.000 m², signed by the architect José de Andrade Raiol, where there’s a covered amphitheater for cultural and entertainment activities. At the same place, there’s Palacete Bolonha, open to public visits, which is one of the most representative architectural constructions in Belém from the beginning of the 20^th century.

Museu da Imagem e do Som e Palacete Facíola

A cultural heritage of Pará, the Centro Cultural Palacete Facíola is part of the collection of the Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS) and of the Departamento de Patrimônio Histórico, Artístico e Cultural (DPHAC) of Belém. It has areas dedicated to the preservation of the collection, to the temporary exhibits, to heritage education, to preservation and inspection of heritage, as well as an auditorium for activities related to tangible and intangible cultural heritage manifestations from Pará. The Museu da Imagem e do Som works with audio records, such as k7 tapes; vinil discs and CDs, and with video materials, such as VHS tapes; 35mm and 16mm film stock; DVDs; DV, DVCam and HDCam tapes; photos and printed material.

Museu de Gemas São José Liberto

This museum is in the building which safeguards the “São José Prayer”. Built as a convent in 1749, it also served as a gunpowder deposit, barrack, pottery and hospital until the 19^th century, being one of the oldest buildings in the city. From the 40s of the 20^th century, it underwent several renovations to become the Presídio São José (São José Prison), later deactivated by the State Government in 1998. Between 2000 and 2002, it was adapted to house the Complexo São José Liberto, currently comprising the Museu de Gemas do Pará, the Oficina de Joias and the Casa do Artesão. The Museu das Gemas, integrated to the Museum System, recalls the history of gemology in Pará since periods dating back to the 18^th century and of gemstone exploration until today.

Street Fairs

Feira do Ver-o-Peso

The Mercado Ver-o-Peso (a.k.a Mercado Municipal Bolonha de Peixe, Mercado de Ferro or just Ver-o Peso) is a public market, open fair, and small port area, opened in 1901 (replacing the Casa de Haver-o-Peso, 1625-1899). The market is part of the Complexo do Ver-o-Peso, formed by Mercado de Ferro, Praça do Pescador, Doca das Embarcações (1803, and fish fair), Pedra do Peixe and by the open fair (considered the biggest in Latin America). The fair supplies the city with clothing, medicinal herbs, food (such as fish and meat) from the surrounding islands of the capital and from smaller towns of the state.

Feira do Açaí

The Feira do Açaí is a public commercial point, an open-air fair for the selling of açaí, a small port area and a place full of snack bars, which is part of the Complexo do Ver-o-Peso, located on the banks of Guajará bay in the Cidade Velha neighborhood.

Feira da 25

Feira da 25 is one of the most famous fairs in Belém, where you can find fruits, vegetables, açaí, sea food, flour, and so on, in a wide range of prices.

Ilha de Cotijuba

The Protected Area of Cotijuba Island (APA da Ilha de Cotijuba) is an area of environmental protection located in Cotijuba Island, one of the 42 islands of Belém’s insular region.

Ilha do Marajó

It’s a fluvial-maritime island inside the Protected Area of the Marajó Archipelogo, in Pará. It’s considered the largest fluvial-maritime island on the planet.

How to get there: It can take around two hours, depending on the boat you get on. There are fast motorboats, catamarans, and ferries for the crossing. The route starts at Belém Waterway Terminal, on Avenida Mal. Hermes, 901 150 – Umarizal, Belém – PA.

Ilha de Mosqueiro

The Ilha do Mosqueiro is an admistrative distric of Belém. Mosqueiro is a river island on the eastern coast of Pará river, in the south portion of the Amazon River, in front of the Guajará Bay. It has 17km of freshwater beaches with tidal waves. The name “Mosqueiro” comes from “moqueio”, and ancient fish cooking practice done by the Tupinambás.

How to get there: The best way to visit the Ilha do Mosqueiro is by car or bus. The island in 70km away from downtown Belém. The access is throught BR-316 and then PA-391. The 970 bus line leaves daily at Belém Bus Station. The ticket is R$ 5,80. Another option is the waterway transport, which takes 1h30, leaving from Belém Waterway Terminal to Mosqueiro Waterway Terminal. On weekdays the ticket is R$ 10, and on weekends it’s R$ 20.
